The Review

Hopefully most of you by now would have completed your reviews - To me it really looks like we are getting more of the curve only now it is all lost in the ambiguity of a three-point scale.

What did you like or dislike about this process? Is it any different from before?

PS: I couldnt help but notice an interesting comment to my previous post -

"To the Management -By acknowledging the presence of this blog you have also tacitly endorsed the tone and purpose of this blog - Kudos to all of you!

However if this is indeed a healthy forum for self-expression why not encourage this inside of the company in the first place? Mini India - will you stop this blog if that happens?"

What do you think? Is Microsoft India ready to discuss uncomfortable issues openly?

MS India will not allow an internal blog because we don't have the maturity allow people a forum to air their views. The employees will not use it because we don't trust the management to not 'target' people posting in the blog.

I agree on the curve. There IS a forced curve in place. 2.5; 3, 3.5, 4; and 4.5, 5 are the brackets for underachieve, met, exceeded expectations respectively. The rest of this is just smoke and mirrors.

Finally, we have been asked to provide feedback on the retreat. Is it worth doing it? I also gave feedback on the Mid Year update and nobody shared the findings with us. Why does HR not do this?

New review system is good but I am not sure how this stocks work. Is HR Web really transparent on stock or there is hidden mystery it. Talk about transparency within transparency ..LOL ...pitty..

If there is a place to blog anonymously or at least post comments anonymously, why not?

Review process in MSFT I suppose is a vehicle to tell the employee why he is getting a lower hike than his colleaegues and the industry per se :)

After all these years I still dont understand the 'Review" process, forget the transparency. Not worth debating anymore :(

Retreat @ Hyd this time was a welcome change to the onces in the past. Can someone help me define what the retreat is for? Is this the time to celebrate? Or is this the time to introspect? Or is this the time to know the "new gen" people joining us like herds:)

I disagree on the tone regarding "Gifts". There is this saying in whatever language you understand, "A gift consists not in what is done or given, but in the intention of the giver or doer". There is nothing that this company can gift, that's not within the reach of our salary. So, lets stop whining about gifts.

There is more this blog can achieve than waste the real estate on this site by debating useless issues.

Let me briefly introduce myself. I hold a senior position at Microsoft India and have worked hard to get here. I am posting this because I am just fed up with this blog.

You guys are a bunch of whiners who don't have the balls to leave Microsoft and instead prefer to complain about retreat locations, gifts, review process etc. My advise is that if you don't like what you see, feel free to get the hell out. This is a free market and just as I won't hesitate to fire you to meet my headcount or review curve goals, you should not hesitate to leave if things are not the way you want them to be. You are not here to change Microsoft and neither am I. Both of us are in it for the paycheck. You will not get wealthy at Microsoft. With BrianV leaving and Corp now claiming that the EU may cause us to delay vista, don't expect our stock to zoom up any time soon.

The minimsft blog focussed on Redmond does nothing more than annoy the heck out of a lot of executives. My guess is that the Indian Leadership Team does not bother to read this blog, so even the 'annoyance' goal is not met by the minimsftindia.

A couple of tips for you newcomers: we have higher grade levels at Hyderabad, we have a better lifestyle, more stock, lower cost of living, different HR leadership. And guess what, you're not ever going to be part of this.

While on the subject of uncomfortable discussions, I'd like to know why ALL the senior level hiring is from either Redmond or HCL/HP. Does this mean that the talent within the MS India ranks is non existent or the people outside are just so incredible ? Or is this a function of the system where we were all hired at such low grade levels and the new positions are much higher levels that we have no way of qualifying for these roles? And if succession planning is so important and a priority, why did it take so many months to fill in the EPG Director role that is now the fiefdom of the HP/HCL crew? You would think that when one part of the business contributes such a large percentage of the revenue, there would be some overlap with the old guard and a structured hand off process.

To the senior who posted here-I completely agree with you. I am one of those guys who got fed up in Microsoft India and moved to other pastures that are greener.

As per you, you are part of the problem at IDC-you do not have the honesty to back up your statement with your name. Will you have the honesty to say the same thing in a team meeting or a larger group without the cloak of anonymity? You feel this way but you do not have the courage to tell it out openly.

we should have an internal (Intranet) BLOG site, if technology permits; so we can discuss crucial issues freely & anonymously, without the concern that our competitors feast on this Blog :-)

To the senior person at IDC who is anonymous for some reason, it is good to know that you think we will not have better lifestyle, stocks and salary and what not at SMSG. At least it keeps you happy and satisfied - which is very important in life - so says Guru Mastram. However reality may be quite different. You just have to be in sales and sell than make silly statements on your stocks. Some of the bonuses in sales this year maybe bigger than your salary and I know that you dont get $1 million a year.

I think this blog is a great idea. Here's why: We dont have any form of feedback mechanism here. Be it to discuss grave issues like our strategy or trivial matters like the poorly designed retreat tshirt (who could get their heads into that small neck without choking!)

I'm glad there is some forum where everyone can log their thoughts on the good and bad aspects of working here.

And to balance the gripey tone we tend to take, here is a sample of what i love about working here (at SMSG) : I see MS as a platform for making an impact to the larger community and the nation. Yes, i really do :) And I absolutely love MS for it. And as long as I can do the above, I will stay.

The second good thing is we dont have IDC senior management at SMSG ;)

This is the problem as I see in MS. The executives don't want to see the problem. I guess its people like him who want only yes men in the company, and will ultimately lead to the company falling flat. And its becaues of people like these who don't want to acknowledge a problem that I left. And by the time the company falls apart - he would have made his millions so would not be affected by it.

A couple of tips for you newcomers: we have higher grade levels at Hyderabad, we have a better lifestyle, more stock, lower cost of living, different HR leadership. And guess what, you're not ever going to be part of this.

Higher grade levels to what ? Google pays better. Other startups pay better. ( I got a 50% hike over what I was getting).

200 pidly didly stocks ? I am getting 3000 in my new company.

Hyd cost of living has gone up. You may have bought your swanky new house a couple of years back. Now the cost of living is sky high. This advantage hyd no longer has. Live in reality, and not in castles of air. Also there are no weekend escapes. Go to PVR or Prasads and they are choked out. No decent outting place except for Sagar and Sriselam - and once to those places is enough. So, most people end up staying in office even on weekends.

Contrast this with Bangalore - Nandi Hills, Mysore, Ooty, Jog Falls, Kudremukh, Mekedatu, Sivasamudram...

Contrast this with pune/mumbai - Mahabaleshwar, Lonavla, Khandala, Murud, Janjira, Goa...

we should have an internal (Intranet) BLOG site, if technology permits;

If Technology Permits ? Dude . Are you working in MS ? Dont you know that msn space is a blog and technology does permit ? If you want a simple blog running on your machine - download wordpress (scobelizer who recently left MS is using it for his blog). To run it on your windows machine , download and install apache triad. Tell ya what ... get a new box. install linux. then you only need to install and configure wordpress on it.

OTOH, you can code it all in .NET ( my earstwhile manager used to love saying "Real men Code"! LOL !).

OR, maybe you wanted to type "If managment permits" ;-)
